Make Money or Be Social?

OK here’s the deal… there are all kinds of “guru’s” out there telling you how to make money online.  Just buy my product and you’ll see how I made 6 million dollars in only 45 days! Right?  Wrong!!!

All these guys are teaching you is how to sell shovels to miners and hey if that’s what you want to do go for it.  I would rather pick a niche, research high paying keywords and affiliate products and get my traffic from the big G.

A lot of bigwigs are doing the social chase your tail dance.  That’s exactly what depending on Social traffic is, chasing your tail.

Don’t believe me? Ok how about an example…

You decide you’re going to be the next big thing and sell Cheap Titleist  Logo Golf Balls.  So you build your site all about Titleist golf balls, join every social network known to man and post every day to get readers and email subscribers.  You furiously write every day about how great Titelist golf balls are.  You get some followers that also like to use the very same golf balls.  Now you have to keep those readers happy and post more often, not to mention answering emails, twittering, posting on facebook, commenting on blogs….. Whew! I’m exhausted already.

Now, the alternative.  You again decide you’re going to be the next big thing, this time with golf gps systems.  But instead of doing all the exhausting social facebooking, twittering, commenting and chasing followers, you decide to go the SEO route.

You optimize your blog focused on Golf GPS Systems and you write a few posts about some good ones.  Now you go about gaining backlinks with the anchor text “Golf Gps Systems” and variations of that term.  Little by little you gain traction with the search engines.  You do a few articles with your anchor text linking to your keyword focused posts on your keyword focused blog all about golf gps.  Pretty soon you rank number 1 for Golf GPS Systems.  Guess what? Now all you have to do is add a backlink here and there to keep your position.  How many more GPS systems do you think you’ll sell when your customers are searching for “Golf GPS Systems” and there you are number 1 in Google for that term.  Now you decide to go after Ping Golf Clubs how easy is that going to be now that you know the process?

If the above wasn’t completely clear here’s a rundown.

1. Create a keyword focused site about your niche.
2. Post content each piece of content should focus on one longtail keyword with supporting keywords mixed in.
3. Get anchor text backlinks to your content using your keywords.

I would much rather spend  my time chasing search engine traffic.  Just seems like a no brainer to me.

If your goal is to be an A-list blogger, knock yourself out and go for the social traffic.  If you want to make money check out Griz and focus on SEO and backlinks.
