The secret to affiliate marketing or to any online marketing venture is…. there are no secrets! I know that’s not a popular position to take in today’s online marketing world where every Guru under the sun wants to sell you their latest secret to instant cash. But, it’s the truth. Everything that you need to know about making money online is available free.

Want to make money with Adsense? Research keywords create content and build back links. Want to make money with affiliate products? Research keywords, create content and build back links. Want to make money selling your own products? Research keywords, create content and build back links. Are you starting to see a pattern here?

Making money online comes down to just three things. Researching keywords, creating content and building back links. This has worked since the beginning of internet marketing and it still works today. I’m willing to bet it will continue to work for years to come.

Researching keywords is something that a lot of people get stuck on. Keywords are what people type into their search bar to find something they are interested in, usually Google. So if you’re interested in finding information about “American bulldog puppies” I’m going to bet that you’ll type “American bulldog puppies” into Google search and get all kinds of information about them. There are a lot of tools available to help you with keyword research one of my favorites being Market Samurai. This is not a testimonial so I’ll just keep it at that.

Keyword research can be broken down into two parts, approximate search volume, and competition. When you find a keyword phrase that has good search volume you need to look at the competition for that phrase. If the top ten sites that rank for your keyword phrase have a PR7 with 20,000 page back links you may want to rethink your chosen keywords.

Creating content is not as difficult but people tend to over complicate this one as well. Content is content, period. We’re not writing War and Peace here or trying to win a Nobel Prize. We’re writing content focused on our chosen keywords. Write what you know about those keywords. If you don’t know anything about them, go learn about it then write about them. Not rocket science! Just do it.

Building back links is the most time consuming part of all. Most people give up at this point. I spend the majority of my time building back links. Why? Because keyword specific anchor text back links raise my search engine rankings and search engine traffic is FREE! Some ways to build back links are article marketing, feeder sites, forum posting and blog commenting. I primarily use article marketing because I find I get more bang for my buck out of it.

If you want to make money online, choose a product, research keywords, create content and build back links. There are no secrets to this stuff, even though we would love to have a magic button to push that would fill our Paypal accounts with money it just isn’t going to happen.
